A-S Media Studies - BBFC Movie Ratings
What are BBFC Ratings?
The BBFC (the British Broadcast Film Classification) is a
way in which the company of a movie or movies in co-operation make a movie
title, but have to give the movie an age ratings. For example, movies designed
for educational purposes; children’s movies tend to vary in movie ratings,
things from U (suitable for all), PG (parental guidance), PG12 (suitable for
12yr olds and over). Though films for the older audience (mature audience too)
usually get ratings of 15 (suitable for 15yr olds and over), 18 (suitable for
adults) and R18 (adult works for license premises only).
Our Movie's BBFCBecause our movie is based upon a horror movie; paranormal
and psychological horror to be precise. We plan our movie to have a rating of
at least a 15 (15yrs and over). We would like a higher, older rating due to the
language and scenes displayed within the opening titles screen. We might
include strong language which wouldn’t be pleasant for the younger audience
(even with the younger audience, viewer discretion is advised). Scenes could
also contain gore and/ or unpleasant events which will be displayed on camera
(hence the horror movie).
Other Horror Movies in ComparisonThere are different types of horror movies which have
different ratings. Some tend to be PG (Parental Guidance) as some children are
suitable to watch them For example:
• Nightmare
on Elm Street; Rated 18.
• Friday
the 13th; Rated 18.
• Scream;
Rated 18.
• The
Shining; Rated 15.
• Saw;
Rated 18.
• Blair
Witch Project; Rated 18.
• Alien;
Rated 15.
• The
Exorcist; Rated 18.
ConclusionIn conclusion, from most horror movies analysed, we are
going to stick to a 15 to 18 rated film because as we plan on using and
developing gory content for the older audience to enjoy – though we’re planning
on going to use a rated 15, purely because as much as we plan on having it
gruesome and gory, we also want our younger audience to enjoy it too. By all
means the younger audience can watch but viewer discretion is a necessity to be
able to watch the movie. Not only will it (possible) contain some gory scenes,
but language might be slightly strong for the younger audience too. With these
elements of a horror movie, we plan on creating both a psychological and
slasher horror too; meaning there will be violence going on throughout the
movie.
